Day 121 – Reinsdyrsflytting (Raindeer hurding)

Mye jevn stigning hele dagen.

Glad vi slipper å vade over her.

Du kunne se at gjerde hang litt ned flere steder.

English translation: Started the day with Lars Bråten driving us to where the trail started. Very nice, it saved us a whole day (10 km) on asphalt / gravel path. Now that we know we won’t make it to Nordkapp anyway, we’ve become a bit more chill about the fact that we have to walk every single metre. At the start of the trail, we also met Geir Morten, who also lives here. He came driving past on his way and stopped to say hello and chat.
Lots of steady climbing all day. Up until we arrived at the boat we had to pull ourselves over the river, there were incredibly nice and good paths. We kept our feet dry all the way to where the path to the people’s hut took off towards Daningen. All the boards disappeared there and thus we had to forge the bog again. All the time, there is a bit of mud here and there, but we don’t have to walk in mud all the time because there is also a lot of good ground. In some parts there were no cairns, and you had to navigate your way through underbrush. Absolutely fantastic weather all day, sunny and relatively calm.
Up the mountainside, we happened to meet a Sami on an ATV who was moving a herd of reindeer. We sat down and watched this until they had passed. Incredibly fascinating to watch. Pretty incredible that they have an ATV that can drive around in that terrain here! As he drove by, he waved from his ATV, before stopping and using his binoculars to study the reindeer.
Up the side of the mountain the path followed next to a river which was quite large. But the water level was so low that there was only a small stream left. So we went straight where the river had polished the mountain into a nice highway. It’s amazing how small the river is now compared to what it used to be! Glad we don’t have to wade over it.
Where the path was supposed to pass the reindeer fence, there was no gate. You could see that the fence sagged a bit in several places. They were clear signs that people had climbed over. Since the river was so small, we just walked over to the river and crossed the fence through the river bed, because there they had no fence. I thought there were openings in fences that crossed marked paths, so I was a little surprised that there was no opening at all.
Found a great tent spot right by a stream. We were actually going to go on but see that the sun has almost disappeared behind a mountain and then it gets terribly cold. We wanted to get into the sleeping bag before that time, so we pitched the tent. We were both incredibly tired after a lot of climbing, so it was really nice to have an early evening.
